How to start investing in South Africa
South Africa gives savers strong tax breaks: a tax-free savings account, a tax deduction for retirement annuities, and government retail bonds from R1,000. Use the tax-free space first, then build a mix of funds that suits how long you can leave the money.

- Keep three to six months' spending in a money market fund or notice account as an emergency fund.
- Use your tax-free savings allowance first: R46,000 a year, ideally in a low-fee index fund or ETF for long-term money.
- Use a retirement annuity for the tax deduction if you have taxable income and no or low employer pension.
- For safe, fixed income, consider RSA Retail Savings Bonds from R1,000 straight from government.
- Check fees: a total expense ratio of 0.3% versus 1.5% a year makes a large difference over 20 years.

Returns are not guaranteed and change every year. Use a return you can justify, for example a recent money market yield for savings, and a lower figure than past share returns for long-term goals. Fees and tax reduce what you keep.
Questions about investing in South Africa
How much can I put in a tax-free savings account in 2026?
R46,000 a year from 1 March 2026, and R500,000 over your lifetime, according to SARS.
Can I take money out of my retirement annuity?
Since the two-pot system started on 1 September 2024 you can withdraw from the savings pot once per tax year, at least R2,000, taxed at your marginal rate. The retirement pot stays locked until retirement.
Are RSA Retail Savings Bonds safe?
They are loans to the South African government, so the risk of not being paid is very low. Fixed-rate bonds lose buying power if inflation rises above the rate; inflation-linked bonds protect against that.
