Stocks and indices for African traders

Forex is only one market. Here is how to own shares or trade indices from Kenya, South Africa and Nigeria: the three ways to take part, the exchanges and their hours in your time zone, and lessons on trend and swing trading.

Three ways to take part in the stock market

WayWhat you getWhereRiskDividendsBest for
Real sharesYou own part of the companyA licensed stockbroker or investing app in your countryLower: you can lose what you put in, not moreDividends paid to youHolding for months or years
ETFs (index funds)One share holds a whole index, e.g. the JSE Top 40 or S&P 500A stockbroker or investing appLower, spread over many companiesPaid or reinvested by the fundLong-term investing at low cost
Stock and index CFDsA contract on the price; you do not own the shareA licensed CFD brokerHigher: leverage magnifies gains and lossesAdjusted in cashShort-term trades, indices, betting on falls

Most people who want to grow money over years start with real shares or ETFs. CFDs are trading tools, and most retail CFD accounts lose money. Read our risk warning.

Questions about stocks and indices

How can I buy shares from Kenya, South Africa or Nigeria?

Open an account with a stockbroker or investing app licensed in your country (CMA in Kenya, FSCA in South Africa, SEC in Nigeria), get your securities account, fund it by bank transfer or mobile money and place an order. The exchanges publish lists of their licensed brokers.

What is the difference between a share and a stock CFD?

A share makes you part-owner of the company and pays you dividends. A CFD is a contract with a broker on the price: you can use leverage and bet on falls, but you pay overnight costs and can lose more than you planned.

What is an index?

A number that tracks a basket of shares, for example the 40 biggest companies on the JSE (Top 40) or 500 large US companies (S&P 500). You can invest in an index through an ETF or trade it with a CFD.

When can I trade US stocks from Africa?

Wall Street is open 09:30–16:00 New York time: 16:30–23:00 in Nairobi until early November, then 17:30–00:00 until mid-March. Subtract one hour for South Africa and two for Nigeria.

Is trend following or swing trading better for stocks?

They suit different people. Trend following holds for weeks or months and has fewer trades; swing trading holds for days and needs a daily routine. Both need rules, stops and testing. See the two lessons on this page.
