What are stocks? How to buy shares on the JSE, NSE, NGX and US markets

A share (or stock) is a small piece of ownership in a company. If the company grows and earns more, its shares usually become more valuable. Shares are the main way ordinary people take part in the growth of businesses like Safaricom, Naspers, MTN or Apple.

How you make money from shares

  • Capital growth: you buy at KSh 20 and later sell at KSh 30.
  • Dividends: many companies pay part of their profit to shareholders, often once or twice a year.

Over long periods, share markets have tended to grow faster than inflation, but there have been many years with large falls. That is why shares suit money you will not need for at least five years. See Investing long term.
