How to use the profit and loss calculator
- Pick your account currency and what you are trading.
- Choose Buy if you expect the price to rise, Sell if you expect it to fall.
- Type your trade size in lots.
- Type the entry price (we fill in a recent price) and the exit price you want to test.
- Read the result. Try your take profit first, then your stop loss, to see both outcomes.
Example: buying gold
- Buy 0.05 lots of gold at 2,600.00, exit at 2,615.00.
- That is a $15.00 move = 150 pips (1 pip = $0.10).
- 0.05 lots × 100 oz × $15 = $75 profit, before costs.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting costs: spread, commission and overnight swap reduce the result.
- Mixing up buy and sell. When you sell, you profit when the price falls.
Questions
How is forex profit calculated?
Profit = price change × units traded, converted into your account currency. Units = lots × contract size (100,000 for currencies, 100 oz for gold).
Why is my broker's result slightly different?
Your broker includes the spread, commission and swap, and uses its own live conversion rate.
