Trading discipline: how to follow your rules when it matters

Discipline is not a personality trait you either have or not. It is a system: rules, routines and limits set up in advance so the right action is the easy one.

Build discipline with systems

  • Pre-trade checklist: five yes/no questions before every trade. Any “no” means no trade.
  • Pre-commitment: set stop loss and take profit when you open the trade, not later.
  • Daily loss limit: stop after losing, for example, 3% or two losing trades in a row.
  • Fixed hours: trade only in your planned window.
  • Remove temptation: turn off trading app notifications outside your hours.
Pre-trade checklist
  • Is this one of my written setups?
  • Is the trend on the higher timeframe in my favour?
  • Is risk 1% or less, sized with the calculator?
  • Is risk/reward at least 1 : 1.5?
  • Is there no high-impact news in the next 30 minutes?
