Funded trading accounts and prop firms explained: how challenges work and the real odds

A funded account lets you trade a firm's capital and keep a share of the profits, usually after passing a paid evaluation (a challenge). It can be a way to trade with more capital than you have, but most people who try do not reach a payout.

How it works

  1. You pay a fee for a challenge on an account size, for example $10,000 or $100,000.
  2. You must reach a profit target without breaking loss limits (daily and total drawdown).
  3. If you pass (often in one or two phases), you get a funded account, usually simulated, with the same rules.
  4. You receive a share of profits, often 80–90%. Break a rule and the account is closed.

Questions people ask

Are prop firms regulated?

Most are not regulated as brokers because traders usually trade simulated accounts. That makes checking the firm's history and rules important.
